Featuring a compelling and surging pop-rock score (book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey and music by Tom Kitt), Next to Normal shatters through the façade of a suburban family dealing with the direct and indirect effects of mental illness. The Goodmans, in fact, seem like a perfect family. Dad's an architect; Mom rushes to pack lunches and pour cereal; their daughter and son are bright, wise-cracking teens, appearing to be a typical American household. And yet their lives are anything but normal because the mother, Diana, has been battling bipolar disorder for 16 years. Next to Normal takes audiences into the minds and hearts of each character, presenting their family's story with love and compassion. For this production, SAPAC is partnering with NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness). Experts will be involved in talk-backs following every performance, and resources will be made available for those who have questions or want more information. Caution: Because this production references mental illness, electroshock therapy and suicide, audiences are to be advised. Due to sexual situations and adult language, this show is not recommended for children under 16.
