She Planted a Garden. Nearly a Century Later, It Still Welcomes Us.

Some of the Arizona Inn’s history is still growing. It reaches above the garden paths, offers shade beside its pink walls, and flowers quietly while guests linger over their mornings. To walk through these gardens is to encounter a part of Isabella Greenway’s vision that has continued to unfold since she opened the Inn in 1930.

On opening night, Isabella described the hospitality she hoped to offer with three simple words: “privacy, quiet and sunshine.” She gave those words a setting, thoughtfully laying out the flowerbeds, hedges and trees around her new hotel. In a Tucson that was much smaller than the city we know today, she created a place where the landscape helped guests feel welcome.

The Inn’s history, written by her great-grandson Will Conroy, remembers those early plantings and their gradual maturity. Across its 14 acres of grounds and gardens, the passing years brought more shade, fruit and quiet beauty. What began with Isabella’s careful planning became a living part of the Inn, growing alongside the generations who came through its doors.

There is something moving about that kind of hospitality. Planting a tree means offering comfort that will deepen with time. Its shade may eventually shelter someone its planter will never know. Here, nearly a century after the Inn opened, guests continue to enjoy a landscape whose beginnings belong to Isabella’s story.

And today, that story belongs to the people who care for it, too. Some members of the Arizona Inn’s landscaping team were tending these gardens 20 years ago and still work here today. Their long service is a beautiful part of the Inn’s continuing history, deserving recognition alongside the woman who first imagined these grounds.

A garden’s beauty is renewed through daily care. Behind the flowers and welcoming paths are people whose work makes those pleasures possible. For two decades, these gardeners have given their time and attention to the same special place. They continue to bless the grounds with their care, helping preserve something guests can feel even when they do not know the names of the people responsible.

Their presence gives the gardens another kind of continuity. Isabella’s contribution is remembered in the history books; theirs continues here, in the work of keeping a living landscape beautiful. Both are part of what makes the Arizona Inn feel so personal. The gardens have a history, and they also have people looking after their future.

This autumn, leave a little time to enjoy them. Take a gentle walk before breakfast, find a quiet place to sit, or let a conversation last longer than you intended. The gardens invite you to appreciate the simple pleasures Isabella wanted her guests to find here: privacy, quiet and sunshine.

Nearly a century ago, she began something that would keep growing. Today, devoted hands continue to care for it. Every guest who pauses to enjoy these gardens becomes, for a moment, part of that story.

Come stay inside a story.
